What is Jojoba Oil?

While it may sound super cool, what is it really? Jojoba is a vegetable oil that is derived from the beans of the Jojoba shrub that grows in North America and Mexico. It is rich in Vitamins and Minerals including antioxidants, Vitamin E, A and D and takes approximately 6 weeks of application to see its magical results. It is used to treat severe conditions including acne, dryness, eczema and other microbial skin infections like magic!

Fun fact - Contrary to popular belief, Jojoba is not an oil but rather a liquid wax ester making it very similar to the natural oil produced on the skin. Unlike other oils it is non comedogenic and quickly absorbs into the skin thus proving its benefits for those with sensitive and acne prone skin. Read on to understand its benefits and how you can use it in your routine to achieve healthier skin.

    What does it do?

With a range of accolades under his belt, there is reason to believe that Jojoba Oil is one of the greatest oils available for personal health and wellbeing. Keep reading to understand why so many of us swear by this acclaimed ingredient:

      1. Antimicrobial properties

Jojoba demonstrated the ability to reduce the presence of microbes such as bacteria and fungi due to its antibiotic properties. It targets the virus and neutralizes it thus promoting the formation of healthy cells. This can help reduce inflammation, sensitivity and acne.

      2. Natural moisturiser & barrier for your skin

Hydration is a key component of maintaining healthy skin. Natural moisturisers reduce dryness, slow down signs of ageing, soothe the skin and fight acne. It also strengthens cracks and gaps of the skin’s protective barrier that protects us against external factors and prevents irritants from seeping in.

      3. Acts as an antioxidant

Antioxidants are ingredients that protect your skin against free radicals. Jojoba Oil contains forms of Vitamin E that works as a great remedy for skin facing oxidative stress caused by exposure to pollutants and toxins.

      4. Non - comedogenic formula

This means that Jojoba oil will not clog pores keeping it clear from acne and bacteria development caused by pollutants getting trapped into the skin. It makes the perfect oil for those facing acne or breakouts.

      5. Speeds up healing process of wounds

Jojoba Oil encourages the deposition of new collagen to the wound activating collagen synthesis in the tissues of the skin. This helps the skin to heal faster by binding cells together to treat scars, cuts or scratches.

      6. Balances oil levels

Jojoba Oil's close resemblance to natural sebum makes it hard for our skin to tell the difference. This property helps it regulate natural oil levels and balance out the extra lioness or dryness prevalent on your skin.

      7. Nourishes hair

Jojoba Oil helps to strengthen the hair by providing a range of Vitamin and Minerals. It helps to reduce dandruff and moisturise the scalp and hair follicles. It can prevent split ends, frayed hair or any even damage caused by styling products by bringing moisture back to dried hair.

      Who is it for?

Jojoba Oil is one of the few ingredients that has a little something to offer to everyone. It can be used by almost all skin types. However, its antibacterial, anti inflammatory and healing properties make it a “must have” for those facing the following concerns:

      • Rosacea or other forms of acne
      • Eczema
      • Psoriasis
      • Dry skin
      • Ageing or mature skin
      • Hair loss

While Jojoba Oil is considered a fairly safe ingredient, we recommend you to seek professional advice before using products containing Jojoba Oil. Further, do not forget to conduct a patch-test before you use your product!

How do you incorporate Jojoba Oil into your skincare routine?

Needless to say, Jojoba Oil is often found in its natural form, as an oil. However it is also available in a wide variety of consistencies and formulations such as cleansers, toners, serums and other skincare products. You can include Jojoba into your daily routine by choosing a product from the broad range listed down below:

        1. Cleanser

Its resemblance to our skin’s naturally produced sebum makes it a great cleansing composition for those even with sensitive skin. Moreover, since Jojoba is a liquid plant wax, it has a greater stability and a longer shelf life than other conventional cleansing oils. Zyna Deep Cleansing Milk With AHAs contains botanical AHAs and natural skin loving oils of Jojoba and Rosehip Seed help in clearing the dirt, surface debris and makeup from the skin.

        2. Toner

Adding a few drops  of the House of Beauty Peach + Jojoba Toner can close pores and balance pH levels. It also helps serums and face oils to absorb better, giving you the maximum benefit from the products that follow.

        3. Serum

Serums are a concentration of active ingredients used to solve specific skin concerns. The main advantage of using Jojoba as a serum instead of an oil, is the size of its tiny molecules that have the ability to penetrate 7 layers deep rather than simply target the outermost layer of the skin. We recommend the Etsley Argan Oil Facial Serum with Silver Flakes-Skin Repair that contains various oils such as Avocado Oil, Argan Oil, Hazelnut Oil in addition to Jojoba oil that regulates sebum production and moisturises the skin.

        4. Facemask

Dear, Klairs Youthful Glow Sugar Mask is a multi-purpose wash-off sugar mask that can also work as a physical exfoliator. It contains Shea butter and Jojoba seed oil to balance pH levels, moisturise the skin and keep it supple. In addition it also contains Grapefruit extract and Raspberry Seed Oil.  This combination of antioxidant-rich and hydrating ingredients provide inflammation relief and brighten dull looking skin.

        5. Hair Oil

Jojoba Oil helps to strengthen hair follicles, reduce breakage and treat dryness in the hair. You can use it as an overnight mask or 2 to 3 times a week. Alternatively, you could use 2 to 3 drops daily to get that sleek look to tame or style your hair. Check out the Skog Jojoba Oil in its pure form containing Vitamins and Minerals such as Chromium, Copper and Zinc, as well as Omega 6 and 9 Fatty acids.

        6. Shampoo and Conditioner

Jojoba helps to reduce dandruff and an itchy scalp by equaling out the natural oils and pH balance in your hair. Since it does not penetrate as deeply as other oils, it sits on the outer cuticles of each strand and fills up cracks, making it the ideal choice to condition and soften your strands. Perfect for anyone with normal to dry hair, Faith in Nature Jojoba Shampoo | For Curly Hair is for all those curly hair beauties out there. This shampoo helps nourish each cuticle without weighing it down, giving you beautiful curls that you can flaunt. Pair it with the Faith In Nature Jojoba Conditioner | For Curly Hair to  alleviate dryness and lock in the nourishment.

We have listed below a number of dos and don’t you must keep in mind to get the most of your Jojoba products:

This is an image of Do's and Don'ts of using Jojoba Oil on www.sublimelife.in

        Dos:

        • Do apply Jojoba right after cleansing  as this allows it to fully penetrate deep into the skin.
        • Do mix a drop of Jojoba with your moisturiser or serum to provide that extra boost of hydration.
        • Do apply a few drops of Jojoba Oil to damp hair and leave it on for approximately 20 minutes to get smoother results.
        • Do rub the residues of the products on your cuticles to treat dryness.
        • Do use it as a primer for your makeup base. Alternatively, you could mix a drop with your foundation to give you a radiant glow.

        Don’ts:

        • Do not use Jojoba to treat severe medical conditions without consulting a doctor first.
        • Do not overdo it, especially for those with oily skin. Understand your skin type, those with dry skin can use it daily while those with oily skin should mix a drop with other products such as moisturizers or serums or use them every alternate day.
        • Do not apply Jojoba oil without thoroughly cleansing first. This is because it absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving any residue, thus taking any dust or dirt particles sitting on the skin’s surface.

        Conclusion

Jojoba has a large number of healing properties to treat multiple skin and hair conditions. It is relatively safe to use and there are no known side effects. After carefully considering its positive results, we believe Jojoba is truly effective when used with care and consideration. It is a great oil to use, if you want to make your skin look better in every way possible!
